Does deciding what to wear for your Oconomowoc family portrait session stress you out? You are far from alone. As moms, we have to style ourselves and the whole family. So it’s no wonder why it’s stressful, but it doesn’t have to be this way. This is why I’m so passionate about helping my clients with what to wear. It’s how my full-service photography process takes the pressure off moms by offering wardrobe guidance.

Choosing what to wear for your family portrait session doesn’t have to be a struggle. Follow these five tips for nailing what to wear for your portrait session and how full-service photography seamlessly guides you through this process.

My 5 Best Tips on What to Wear for Your Family Portrait Photography Session

1.Start with the End – Let’s start at the end and work our way backward. Where do you want to display these portraits? Is this going to be a statement piece of wall art? If so, consider the style of décor and color palette in the room(s) where the portraits will live. If your home is very formal, choosing casual jeans and t-shirts likely won’t be the best choice. Thinking about the colors and décor in your home will play into your wardrobe choices. Styling your session so that it fits not only your personality but your home as well is what I mean by starting with the end in mind.

2. Mom’s Outfit – After you’ve chosen the style and vibe you’re going for with the session, I highly recommend starting with mom’s outfit. Once mom’s outfit is determined, it’s easier to choose and style the rest of the family’s outfits with hers in mind.

3. Choose Timeless Colors and Avoid Patterns – Blend neutrals and like colors for a timeless look. Avoid loud patterns and stick with solid or soft patterns that will photograph well and stand the test of time. We don’t want your outfits to be distracting or dated in just a few years! Patterns date pictures more than solids.

4. Lean Towards Classic Pieces – Choose classic wardrobe pieces such as oxfords and polos for men and dresses for women. By avoiding super trendy pieces, your portraits will stand the test of time and always look in style!

5. Professional Hair and Makeup – After you’ve selected your outfits, you’ll likely think about how you want to style your hair and makeup. I can’t recommend booking professional hair and makeup enough! With your photo-ready look, you’ll feel confident and amazing for your portrait session.

BONUS – Right before your session, take everything off your wrists, like hair ties and Apple watches. I know you love your Apple watch (and other similar tech), but someday it’ll look very dated). Also, remove everything from your pockets such as cell phones. As your photographer, I’ll remind you of this too.
