The class of 2020 will undoubtedly remember how the end of their senior year went down for the rest of their lives. In the face of uncertainty and disappointment it’s tough not to feel sad and think about all the “what ifs.” They’ve spent four years building up to these last few months of their school career when recognition for all their hard work will have paid off. They’ve envisioned these months looking far different. The mandatory quarantine and shut down of their school has been a tough pill to swallow and my heart breaks for them.

It’s time to bring a little sunshine their way! These seniors certainly deserve to be celebrated for all they’ve accomplished in their academics and extra-curricular activities. Next up I’m honoring Derek, who is a senior at Oconomowoc High School. Derek told me that when they announced the quarantine,

“I felt pretty disappointed because I would be missing prom and possibly graduation.”

That disappointment is felt by so many right now. Derek is an accomplished young man who earlier this year became the 100th Eagle Scout for Troop 12 here in Oconomowoc. Thankfully, that ceremony occurred before Coronavirus hit the United States so he was able to receive this great honor in front of a big audience including family and friends. Read on to learn a bit more about Derek. He’s sure to be on the road to success with his solid character and great attitude!

What was your proudest moment? My proudest moment was achieving my Eagle Scout.

Post-graduation plans? After graduation I plan to attend UW-Whitewater in hopes to pursue a major in business/IT fields. My dream job is to own my own business in the future or work in management at a company.

What is your favorite memory in High school? Going to prom 2019 and homecoming dances throughout my high school career.

What have you learned about yourself during quarantine? That I love to spend large amounts of time biking and enjoying other outdoor activities during quarantine with my family and cousins.

What is the first thing you’ll do after the quarantine is over? Probably get together with my friends.

This or that:
Movies or TV? Movies
Mountains or beach?
Mountains because I love to ski and hike but I don’t enjoy swimming or just laying on the beach.
Summer or winter? Summer because I like warmer weather and the freedom to have large amounts of free time.
Dog or cat? Dogs because you can actually interact with a dog and do active things outside with dogs.

It’s a park he chose for his senior portrait session because of a meaningful family tradition. He hikes at Cushing Park on the last day of school with his family every year. I hope this year is no different!

Show some love to him in the comments below to help him celebrate the rest of his senior year and after!
