It’s always a blast seeing other local female entrepreneurs thrive! A few weeks ago I was privileged to photograph, Jann Fujimoto, MS CCC-SLP, a speech-language pathologist and owner of SpeechWorks LLC. We took updated headshots and a multitude of branding shots for Jann to use on her social media, website, and more.
What made this shoot extra fun was the fact that Jann and I go way back!
“It’s been a joy to serve families in our community over the years. I’ve also enjoyed growing this business alongside Julie Collins Photography, as I remember we’d check in with each other’s business start-up questions by phone or at the school playground.” – Jann

Why Work with a Speech-Language Pathologist?
Speech-language pathologists have the knowledge, training, and expertise to help with speech, language, voice, cognition, and swallowing disorders. We can provide strategies and tips to help your loved one with their communication concerns. Working with a speech-language pathologist can often decrease frustration for a child who can be given tools to communicate. Working with a speech-language pathologist also gives parents a better understanding of how they can best support their child.
What is the Number One Piece of Advice You Would Offer Parents to Help Their Child with Speech Development?
When in doubt, check it out.
As a parent, you are your child’s biggest advocate, so if you have any concern about your child’s speech-language development, then bring it up to the pediatrician, to birth to three services, to the public school’s special education department for pre-schoolers, to the classroom teacher for school-aged children, or to a speech-language pathologist. As nerve-wracking as it can be to worry if your child’s development is on target, just get it done. If your child’s development in on target, then you gain a sense of relief. If your child’s development is not where it should be, then know you’re on the right path to get help and services for your child.
What Inspired You to Start Your Business?
The idea to start a practice in earnest came up when my husband was between jobs. We figured I could start a practice outside of my full-time job with little to no start-up costs faster than it might take him to land a new role. I’d been kicking the idea around a bit around the time we went to a surprise party for a friend. We only knew the hosting family, and the hostess quickly introduced me to another guest, who was an occupational therapist. The first question he asked wasn’t how I knew the guest of honor but “Do you have your own practice?” When I told him I didn’t, he said, “You should” and gave me a few reasons why I should. That chance conversation gave me the confidence that my skills would be of service outside of my day job.
What do you find most rewarding working in the field that you do?
The “Aha!” moment that propels a client or their family towards lasting, positive change. It can be when everything clicks for a child and they are able to say a sound they’ve been working hard on during therapy. It might be when a teen explains how they incorporated their therapy tactics at their first job. Sometimes it’s helping a parent understand the results of a speech-language evaluation and what it means moving forward.
