Choosing the perfect month for your senior pictures can make a huge difference in the overall look and feel of your session. Between school schedules, weather, and Mother Nature’s mood swings, it can be tricky to decide!
As a photographer who specializes in Lake Country Wisconsin senior pictures, I’ve photographed seniors in every season and each month brings its own unique vibe. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide what month fits your vision best.
Quick Pro Tips:
Start thinking now. Booking 4-6 months in advance gives you the best pick of dates and seasons.
Consider school and yearbook deadlines. Summer sessions give plenty of time for yearbook submissions.
Also consider your senior’s schedule to determine the best timing.
June: Early Summer Glow

June is a favorite for many reasons! The weather is warm but not too hot, the greenery is fresh, and the bugs haven’t taken over yet.
If you love that bright, early-summer look, full of soft green tones yet still golden light, June is ideal. Plus, you’ll be one of the first to share your senior photos before everyone else. Finally, early scheduling ease is a bonus!
July: Wildflowers + Summer Energy

Want wildflowers? July is your month! July also brings long evenings and glowing tans. It’s peak summer beauty in Wisconsin!
The downside? It can get hot and buggy. But if you don’t mind a little warmth, this month offers dreamy, colorful backdrops and that carefree summer vibe. You’ll be able to check senior pictures off your checklist before the chaos of back-to-school season hits. One word of caution: July is super popular and fills up fast. Book early!
August: Late Summer Vibes

August means Queen Anne’s lace, late golden sunsets, and warm tones everywhere. You can still find some wildflowers at the beginning of the month but they’re less abundant in August. The heat just burns them up (but this is also dependent on weather and how much rain falls). It’s also one of the most popular months for senior pictures in Lake Country because it bridges summer freedom with the start of senior year. Just be prepared for heat (and likely more bugs), it’s all part of that golden-hour magic!
September: Cooler Temps, Busy Schedules

September means back to school. This month brings a smidge cooler (though very lovely) weather, a few less bugs and beautiful light! The only challenge? Balancing school, sports, and homework. If you plan ahead, though, you’ll still catch gorgeous late-summer colors with less heat, humidity and bugs.
October: Autumn Perfection

If you dream of fall colors, October is the month. Vibrant leaves and cozy layers make for some of the most beautiful galleries of the year.
Just keep in mind that school schedules, sports, and yearbook deadlines can make timing tricky, so booking early is key! October also brings unpredictable weather and frequent reschedules due to rain and wind.
Did you notice most of the pictures above were taken in fields? This is where you’ll see the main difference in backdrops for the month you are booking. Fields can go from soft green hues, to wildflowers galore, to golden tones in the course of the “senior season.” If your preference is to have your photos taken in an urban setting (bonus: no bugs!) or near a lake, the time of year doesn’t matter quite as much.
