I love how senior portraits have evolved over the years from taking a single professional indoor studio portrait to a session that showcases each senior’s personality. Today, I want to share why choosing a meaningful senior session location is important with some tips for how to decide. A while back, I shared tips for how to choose a location for your photography session that was more geared towards families. Read my 4 tips to help your senior choose a portrait session location.
Helping Your Senior Choose a Location in Waukesha County
Choosing a meaningful location will help your senior feel connected to their portraits and it will hold special meaning to your whole family. These are my best 4 tips based on experience, but feel free to reach out to me for any other tips or advice.
- Incorporating Interests & Hobbies
This is so fun! What does your senior like to do? What sports or instruments does your senior play? No matter what, we can feature whatever it is that your senior loves to do. This can involve choosing a location that features their hobby like a sports field or a concert hall.
Here are just a few ideas;
- Instrument/singing
- Sports gear
- Fishing/hunting
- Volunteering
- Car
Of course, we can also feature a few photos with college gear if they are pursuing a higher education degree and have chosen their school. We can even feature the family pet if that’s something your senior would love.

- Location with Special Memories
Is there a park your family frequents? Maybe you enjoy hiking on Lapham Peak or boating on Okauchee Lake. We can choose a location that holds special memories for your senior. Maybe your family loved throwing the frisbee at Naga-Waukee County Park. We can even take some photos while playing frisbee if that’s something your senior would love. You and your senior will look at those photos and remember all the memories you have there.

- Don’t Be Afraid to Be Unique
I’ve shared two ideas to find the right location, and I want to also tell you not to be afraid of being unique! Yes, there are many amazing parks in the Waukesha County area to take photos. There are also many hidden gems or spots you might not have realized would be a senior session location. Is there a favorite coffee shop? Maybe an alley with a pretty brick wall that you pass on the way to school? Maybe the family home’s backyard is perfect and holds many memories. Sky’s the limit!
- Lean on Your Photographer
It’s so important to find a trusted Lake Country senior photographer with experience creating memorable senior portraits. Don’t feel like you have to stick with the usual location choices.
You’ll treasure these portraits forever so make sure you work with a photographer that cares about your entire experience.
